Not only has Harrogate Borough Council refused to release the KPMG report on which the Conservative District Council’s recommendation is based, but now the Secretary of State for Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, is now only corresponding with Conservative councillors.
This, the local Liberal Democrats have said, is leaving the devolution debate mired in secrecy.
The latest Local Government Chronicle reported:
“Meanwhile, Mr Jenrick yesterday wrote to all Conservative councillors in England, giving more details of how he will consider proposals for reform of two tier structures”.
Cllr Geoff Webber, leader of the Liberal Democrats at the county council, said:
"The outcome of local government reorganisation, devolution and the appointment of an elected mayor will have a major impact on York and North Yorkshire residents for years to come. This should be a transparent process allowing residents and their elected representatives to make informed decisions.
"This secrecy and political partiality conflicts with all our democratic principles.”
