JONES TWEETS IN SUPPORT OF OUR NHS WORKERS.
THEN VOTES FOR BILL RESTRICTING RIGHTS OF ESSENTIAL WORKERS FROM OVERSEAS.
LIB DEM SPOKESPERSON JUDITH ROGERSON SAYS ‘HE CAN’T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS’.
Nurses, doctors and carers from all over the world are putting their lives on the line to protect us every single day. Their work will be crucial as the country recovers from the impact of Covid-19.
Liberal Democrats have criticised local Conservative MP Andrew Jones for trying to have it both ways: praising NHS workers one day, then voting against the best interests of our health services.
Yesterday, Harrogate & Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones joined 342 Conservatives in shepherding through the Immigration and Social Security Co-ordination Bill, which will make it much harder for doctors and nurses to come to work in the NHS and virtually impossible to recruit social care workers, hotel staff, or construction workers from overseas.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Harrogate & Knaresborough, Judith Rogerson, said:
“The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the enormous contribution that workers from all over the world make to our country and our communities.
“I’ve found it really moving to hear so many people in Harrogate clapping for key workers each Thursday evening. But it is massively disappointing for our MP to praise these services one day and then vote for a Bill which will make key workers from overseas feel like they are no longer welcome in the country that they call home. The Conservatives can’t have it both ways.
“Nurses, doctors and carers from all over the world are putting their lives on the line to protect us every single day. Their work will be crucial as the country recovers from the impact of Covid-19.
“It is the worst possible time — in the midst of this crisis — for the Conservative Party to be pushing ahead with their plans to make it so much harder for employers to hire people from overseas."
