Over a decade and a half of Tory rule on Harrogate Borough Council has led to complacency and disastrous, ego-driven decision-making.
Nowhere has this been more evident than the colossal waste of money that has been set aside for the council’s new, luxury offices, which have been estimated to be in excess of £17million by The Stray Ferret.
This includes the potential value for this land, which could have left local taxpayers £4.5million better-off.
Why would a Council build their new office on some of the most valuable land in Harrogate?
Meanwhile, as Harrogate Borough Council has made more and more disastrous decisions, its legal costs have skyrocketed.
Between 2015 and 2019, its spending on external legal fees increased by 700% and have remained steady at these eye-watering levels since.
There was yet more scandal when it was revealed the Council handed £10,000 in cash to the Harrogate & Knaresborough Conservative Party.
This money was meant for supporting struggling small businesses, many of which have had to remain closed throughout the various lockdowns. The senior councillor responsible for these grants at the time was also the Chair of the local Tories.
Despite such extravagant spending, Conservatives rewarded our NHS heroes a PAY CUT in the latest budget.
Commenting, local Liberal Democrat campaigner Andrew Kempston-Parkes said:
“We can do so much better than this. Residents deserve to be represented by councillors who put the interests of the community before their own.
“Sadly, this isn’t what we have seen from the Conservatives. It has only got worse in recent years. It’s time for change here in Harrogate.”
